Notes:

  • To test the numeric keypad for the Full size 100% layout be sure Num Lock is ON.
  • The Fn key cannot be tested because it is not registered by the operating system.
  • The free keyboard tester works best on desktop resolutions due to the size of the virtual keyboard.
  • Multimedia keys cannot be tested yet with this version of the keyboard checker.
  • Our tool tries to intercept all key presses in order to prevent them from executing, but that is not always possible (ex: when you press the Win key the Start menu will also open automatically).
  • Some custom keyboard layouts will not look identical to the layout of our three virtual keyboards, but don’t worry, all keys work properly and can be tested.

We adopt a Privacy First mindset: Our tools don’t send back your data to our servers. We don’t store your usage history. We minimize data collection so you can use our tools with confidence.

How to use the Keyboard Tester tool

We tried to build the most straightforward keyboard key checker tool. All you have to do is select the desired keyboard layout you wish to test. Pick between Full size (aka 100%), TKL (known as 80%), or the growing in popularity 75% keyboard layout.

Start typing one key at a time, and the keys you have pressed are automatically grayed out on the virtual keyboard displayed in this page.

Finally, if you wish to change the virtual keyboard appearance you can select between the two visual themes we provide (top right corner of the virtual keyboard).

Frequently Asked Questions (Keyboard Checker Tool)

My keyboard key doesn’t work: what to do?

First, check if any of your keyboard keys are working. Click on the virtual keyboard with your mouse to troubleshoot any issues with our tool, then try each key on your keyboard. If a specific key doesn’t light up when pressed it may mean the key is broken, or it was deactivated by another program. Don’t assume immediately that your keyboard is broken.

The keys on my numberpad are not working: are they broken?

In case of full-size keyboards or keyboards with a numberpad (the numeric pad on the right side) make sure the Num Lock key status is ON. WHen the Num Lock key status is OFF the numeric keys on your keyboard numberpad will not register.

Why cannot I test the Fn (Function) key?

The Fn key is a hardware key that works at a hardware level, thus it is not registered by the operating system. So our checker cannot see and therefore test the functionality of the function key.

Is the keyboard tester compatible with all types of keyboards?

Yes, the keyboard tester tool will test for functionality all kinds of keyboards: membrane, mechanical, wireless, wired, Bluetooth.

Can the keyboard tester distinguish between hardware and software issues?

No, the keyboard checker will only show you if a key press is registered by the operating system of your device. Further testing is required to figure out the cause of the fault.

Does the keyboard tester check for keyboard ghosting or n-key rollover?

Yes, you can press multiple keys at the same time and the tester will automatically highlight the keys you have pressed.

Can I use a keyboard tester if some keys are already not working?

Yes, and you can confirm these keys are are still not working.

Do I need technical knowledge to interpret the results of a keyboard test?

No, our keyboard tester tool is meant for users of any technical knowledge level. You don’t need advanced tech skill to figure out what keys are working or not on your keyboard.

What’s next for our keyboard tester/checker tool?

This tool is in active development, so we plan on introducing a few important updates in the coming months:

  1. Support for multiple layouts – Now we only offer support for QWERTY ANSI-US layouts.
  2. Support for Mac keyboard layouts.
  3. Support for standard multimedia and office keys.
  4. Support for testing touchpad and mouse clicks.
  5. More graphical themes for the virtual keyboard.

Cool ideas that are probably a bit out of reach with today’s web technologies include polling rate tester and maybe input delay testing options. But never say never.

Anyway, if you like this tool make sure you bookmark this page and maybe share it with your friends and colleagues.
