If you’d told me in school that I would author articles and books someday I would have laughed pretty hard. I wasn’t good with words. Now? I’m (arguably) a bit better and a lot more comfortable with my writing.

Things changed when I realized books don’t mean just literature. So, it should come as no surprise that I don’t consider myself a writer, but more an IT professional who also (rarely) authors technical books. And by rarely, I mean just one eBook about WordPress.

With BinaryFork I’m trying to leverage my experience with websites (project management, web development, content management & marketing, and affiliate marketing) that started in the early 2000s by authoring articles and guides that will help others when it comes to technology.

I did a lot of hardware reviews in the past, but now I’m focused on software guides. That was part of my job as a Hardware Editor for a Romanian tech magazine, printed if you can believe it.

I was always attracted by the web, so I’ve made quite a few websites in the past 20+ years. Some were just for clients or friends, some were my own niche sites, mostly focused on tech. I did the writing for most of these websites, or was part of the editorial team, in one way or another.

My webmaster expertise covers content strategy, writing, affiliate marketing, and a bit of SEO, but I also invested a bit of my time in coding, something I get to do on a regular basis as someone that likes to tweak and optimize.

I also don’t consider myself a software developer, but UltraQuick, the theme that powers BinaryFork, is my biggest accomplishment when it comes to coding.

I’m Ionuț-Alexandru Popa, by the way, but you can call me JP.

How BinaryFork Started

I don’t remember exactly how it happened, but at one point I realized that I’m pretty good at diagnosing software problems remotely. It suddenly came as a natural conclusion to me that software guides are something that I could write about, helping more than just my friends and family.

I’m still finding my bearings, trying to find a niche inside the software niche that I can cover, but I’m getting there, you’ll see.

Where Does the Name “BinaryFork” Comes From?

Initially, I planned for BinaryFork to be a software development blog. I would walk people through my journey as a weekend WordPress developer. Turns out I like coding, but not so much talking about it.

“Fork” is a software term, where you would clone some code, then do your own version, hence a fork of the original project. “Binary”? Well, because you’re reading this on a computer or digital device it has to do with bits, zeros, and ones.

I liked the name, so I kept it as it also suits the software focus of the website.
