- Microsoft warned users that unsupported PCs won’t receive important Windows 11 updates.
- For now, that seems not to be true, as the first cumulative patch installed just fine on one of my test VMs.
- This situation could change in the future, but for now, you’re covered if you run W11 on an older PC.
I still very much like Windows 11, but there’s a real show behind it. Microsoft did disappoint a lot of people when it announced the minimum system requirements list, then when it confirmed unsupported PCs can still install and update to W11, but won’t get security updates.
Now the first patch Tuesday has arrived and my VM updated just fine. See below:
I honestly don’t know what to make of Microsoft’s strategy. Do they expect people to buy a new PC just to run Windows 11? It’s good, but not that good, and for now, there isn’t a real reason to upgrade, just promises. Plus there’s all this chip shortage going on that doesn’t help, even if you want to fork the cash for a brand-new computer.
Not only that, but they don’t try and stop you from upgrading an unsupported PC or doing a fresh install. You only get this simple warning.
Oh, and there’s that official registry hack for bypassing most requirements. Yes, that’s right, Microsoft has a documented way of updating incompatible computers. They tell you exactly what you have to do to install W11 on pretty much any system.
I’m guessing these updates will keep coming, if you have Windows 11, no matter if your computer supports it or not. It’s just a guess, of course, but it surely seems like an educated guess.
